Associate Professor Seamus Fagan

Welcome to the English Language and Foundation Studies Centre (ELFS) at the University of Newcastle. Bringing together a wide range of academic expertise, ELFS is part of the University of Newcastle's Academic Division and incorporates the Language Centre and Foundation Studies. Our aim is to provide both Australian and international students with an exciting range of academic options for study in a supportive educational environment, which will enable them to access University study.

HELPING PEOPLE ACHIEVE THEIR DREAM OF TERTIARY STUDY

The Centre provides both English Language and tertiary preparation programs, with our staff teaching over 3000 students each year. We are proud of the achievements of our students. Each year they make up a large proportion of commencing undergraduate and postgraduate students  From the platform of readiness for university study they establish in their preparatory program, our students go on to participate, and often excel in the programs of their choice.

THE RIGHT PROGRAM FOR YOU

In the English Language area, the Centre incorporates a well regarded and comprehensive ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) programs, including both Academic and General English programs, Study Abroad and Short programs at our locations in Newcastle and Sydney.

In the tertiary preparation area, our Newstep program provides people aged 18 to 20 a "second chance" to study at university. This proven pathway has enabled many young people to access undergraduate studies since it was established in 1990. Our Open Foundation program is the largest of its kind in Australia, and has been successfully preparing mature-aged students to enter University since 1974. Our Yapug program is designed to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people qualify for entry into undergraduate degrees at the University of Newcastle.

LEADING ENABLING EDUCATION RESEARCH

International studentOver time, the Centre has been established as a national leader in the research field of enabling education. We seek to strengthen the research base of enabling education in order to facilitate evidence-based practice and policy-making, and to contribute to debates around access and equity in the new Information society.

A PLACE OF OPPORTUNITY

If you are a prospective international student, we believe we have the English Language programs to develop your language skills in preparation for further studies. If you are a prospective Australian student and are looking for the opportunity to change your life, our Foundation Studies programs will help you to realise your potential. The opportunity is yours for the taking.

醫學及健康學院 Tue,25 Sep 2018 14:06:24 +0800 Welcome from the Pro Vice-Chancellor

John Aitken WelcomeWelcome to the Faculty of Health and Medicine, an innovative and dynamic research-intensive faculty.

In collaboration with our external partners and stakeholders, the Faculty strives to make a difference by:

  • preparing exemplary, career ready health care and health research professionals; and
  • producing world leading research that builds capacity for excellence in health care intervention.

Our ability to achieve these goals and build capacity for excellence in health care intervention and research can only occur through an ongoing commitment to our people - the exemplary students we help nurture, the staff that we support to achieve excellence in their chosen fields, and our continued mutually beneficial engagement with local, national and international communities. You can read more about this commitment throughout the Faculty and School web pages.

Our Schools

We are a multi-professional Faculty comprised of four schools all of which are committed to making important contributions to the knowledge and understanding of health issues of global significance:

The School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy is a research intensive School which contains the basic sciences that underpin medicine and all other professions in the health sciences in addition to undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacy degrees.

The School of Health Sciences delivers a range of health professional education degrees in the broad field of allied health and has a developing research profile. The School has a key focus on a strong clinical/workplace element within its professional degree programs.

The School of Medicine and Public Health contains all the clinical disciplines involved in medicine as well as public health, epidemiology and behavioral sciences relating to health.

The School of Nursing and Midwifery has an innovative approach to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and partners with local area health services to provide clinical learning opportunities for our nursing and midwifery students.

Our research

Research excellence flourishes across all fields and at all levels within the Faculty of Health and Medicine.  World class researchers work together to create knowledge across the spectrum of health sciences.  They publish prolifically in the top national and international journals and are focused on increasing both the quality and output of research that produces tangible, groundbreaking results with real impact. This collaborative approach complements the Faculty's integrated undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and our commitment to excellence in professional education.

Our staff

The Faculty is committed to facilitating a culture that respects the needs and aspirations of our staff at all levels.  We do this by encouraging the pursuit of excellence and by actively engaging our staff within a safe, healthy and inclusive environment that explicitly promotes work-life balance and positive mental health. Our aim is to become the international workplace of choice for health researchers, technicians and professional staff.

Our students

The diversity and calibre of students attracted to our programs continues to inspire us. Within a supportive learning environment, our teaching and learning is research-led and student-centred, with a commitment to life-long discovery of knowledge. With extensive use of clinical simulation, laboratory work and placement opportunities our graduates are competitive on the world stage and ready for careers as health practitioners or researchers within a rapidly evolving global environment.  The Faculty is incredibly proud of our cultural inclusion and equity in education with almost half of the Indigenous doctors in Australia having graduated from our Faculty.

Our governance

Sound academic and organisational management in the Faculty is supported by a number of committees that guide various aspects of the Faculty's activities. The Faculty places a focus on ensuring these committees and groups include a wide range of disciplines across other Faculties throughout the University to encourage interdisciplinary learning and best practice.

If you are a current student, I'd like to take this opportunity to wish you all the best with your study. For those of you considering studying, working or collaborating with us I encourage you to take the time to have a look and see what our Faculty has to offer. On behalf of the staff and current students of the Faculty of Health and Medicine, I welcome you.

Govt to check mosquito control works at schools

The acting Secretary for Food and Health, Chui Tak-yi, said government officials will check on schools near where dengue fever patients live, to see if they have implemented mosquito control measures properly before the new school year starts.

He said any schools that are within 500 metres of any patients’ home will be covered. The new school year starts in a weeks' time.

Chui made the comment after inspecting Pentecostal Holiness Church Wing Kwong College in Wong Tai Sin and gave a demonstration to staff members on how to carry out anti-mosquito measures.

He also urged schools to appoint a designated supervisor to oversee mosquito control works.

So far, 23 local cases have been confirmed and 17 of them have been to Lion Rock Park and six are believed to have been infected in Cheung Chau.

Chui said he expect to see more new cases from Cheung Chau. When asked if the government will advise people not to visit the outlying island, Chui said the top priority for the government is to step up mosquito control in the area, and urged residents and visitors to make sure they have sufficient protection.

Meanwhile, Wong Tai Sin district councillors have criticised the government for what they say is a sluggish response to the outbreak.

At a special council meeting held on Friday over the issue, members said they've been having a hard time trying to get officials to help carry out mosquito control measures at private estates.

One of them, Roy Ting, also said the government's using outdated methods.

"I think it'd quite bureaucratic in terms of all the progress they've been through. And, the method they were using... according to [the World Health Organisation], there are a few new measurements which can be used to prevent or to control the spread of the dengue fever.. which I believe we are not using now. We are still using the traditional spraying methods," he said.

WHO has been encouraging countries to control the mosquito population through innovative and biological methods on experimental basis. It has been considering the use of genetically modified mosquitoes to eradicate dengue-spreading ones.
